4 Years In: What We Learned About Starting Therapy

September 12, 2022 - the day this all started.

Four years. 4500+ sessions. Over 150 clients. One new associate. And countless people who told us they were scared, or fearful, or nervous - but saw something that made them come anyways. Maybe that sounds familiar.

A lot happens in four years. We’ve learned a lot about ourselves, about this therapy practice, and more than anything we’ve learned from our clients. All of that because of what happens on the other side of that fear.

People are willing to keep showing up for themselves. It could be that first consultation, saying something out loud for the first time, or even coming back after a difficult session. Showing up for yourself is bravery, and it’s humbling for us to witness every single time.

Relationships and connection matter. And we will shout this from the rooftops. Growth can happen in relationships just as much as challenge does. We’ve seen clients notice patterns, set boundaries, and create new opportunities all in the pursuit of connections.

Nothing happens with neutrality. Even the slower and quieter sessions are doing something. There won’t be a breakthrough every time because change is not linear. Sometimes there will be a single moment where it all clicks together, and other times it will be a slower, unfolding process. We’ve learned to honour those slow moments, the celebrations, the positive news, and embrace the process as much as our clients.

Four years also hasn’t always been easy.

There have been mistakes, poor investments of time, money, and energy, and navigating the world outside of the therapy room.

There have been moments where we weren’t sure if we could continue to do the work that we love, or if we were doing it well enough.

Those were the moments where we had to return to our “why”.

Why we do this work, and why we have tried to carve out this little piece of the world as Perdicou Psychotherapy.

Perdicou Psychotherapy is for people who look like us, who feel like us, and whose identities and experiences are often overlooked in traditional mental health spaces.

We work with people who exist at the intersections of what it means to Black, Racialized, or Queer that are trying to move through life, overcome burnout, and just function in a world that doesn’t always embrace us.

We work with women in their 20s and 30s who are trying to navigate anxiety, identity, attachment, motherhood, friendships, and the pressure to “have it all together” in a world that doesn’t always see us.

Does this sound like you? We’re still here, and showing up for people the way we have since day one. We have space for new clients this fall, and we’d love for you to join us.
