Frequently Asked Questions

Starting therapy often comes with questions — about how long it takes, what’s covered by insurance, and how virtual sessions work. At Perdicou Psychotherapy, we offer online therapy in Ontario, Alberta, and across Canada, helping clients access care that feels safe, supportive, and flexible. Below, you’ll find answers to common questions about psychotherapy coverage, payments, and virtual counselling to help you feel informed before your first session.

FAQs

  • The length of therapy depends on your personal goals, needs, and treatment plan. Together, you and your therapist will decide what approach and pace fit best for you.

Some clients find short-term therapy (around 6–12 sessions) helpful for focused goals, while others prefer ongoing support for deeper self-exploration and long-term growth.

We encourage all clients to have open and honest conversations about how therapy feels, affordability, progress toward goals, and when it might be time to pause or end therapy.

  • Unfortunately, psychotherapy and social work services are not covered by OHIP. However, many extended health benefit plans through private insurance providers do offer partial or full coverage.

Before booking your first session, we recommend confirming with your provider whether they cover services by a Registered Psychotherapist, Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), or Registered Social Worker—and how much coverage is available per year or session.

  • We do not direct bill insurance companies at this time.

You can pay for sessions by e-transfer or credit card through your secure Jane account. After your session, you’ll receive an invoice immediately and a receipt once payment is processed.

You can then submit your receipt directly to your insurance company for reimbursement.

  • Yes — we exclusively offer virtual therapy to make sessions accessible and flexible.

Lewis Perdicou is licensed and insured to work with clients in Ontario and Alberta.

Genna Ekambi is licensed and insured to work with clients in Ontario, Alberta, BC, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan.

Due to licensing regulations, clients may need to be physically located in one of these provinces during their session.

You can join from anywhere you feel comfortable, as long as you have privacy, a stable internet connection, and a device for your session. Your therapist may check in if your location appears unfamiliar to ensure confidentiality and comfort.

  • Before your initial therapy session, please take a few moments to prepare:

    • Complete the intake form and sign the confidentiality and consent to treatment documents.

    • Carefully review our policies and procedures to understand how we work together.

    • Feel free to bring any questions or concerns you have about therapy, the process, or what to expect.

Starting therapy can feel like a big step — preparation helps ensure your first session feels safe, grounded, and clear.

  • Our therapists are regulated health professionals in good standing with their respective colleges — the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW), Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW) and/or the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO).

We are authorized to provide psychotherapy in Ontario and are committed to the highest standards of ethics, confidentiality, and professional conduct. You can trust that your care is grounded in professionalism, integrity, and ongoing accountability to our regulatory bodies.

  • At Perdicou Psychotherapy, your privacy is central to everything we do. We will never share your information with a third party without your knowledge or consent, and we will only contact you through the agreed-upon methods at the start of services.

All personal health information is managed under Ontario’s Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA, 2004). This means your information is collected, used, and stored in compliance with strict privacy legislation.

We collect and use your personal information only for the following purposes:

    1. Treatment planning and continuity of care

    2. Providing appropriate referrals

    3. Maintaining internal records in compliance with provincial legislation

    4. Collecting non-identifiable, aggregate data for service improvement

    5. Meeting legal or professional obligations (e.g., responding to a College inquiry)

Your information is securely stored and protected against unauthorized access, loss, or misuse. We use Jane, a secure, PHIPA-compliant virtual practice management platform for scheduling, invoicing, and payments. We regularly audit this system to ensure ongoing compliance.

  • Your electronic medical record (EMR) is securely stored on Jane’s PHIPA-compliant servers. Only your therapist, and the Director of Perdicou Psychotherapy have access to our EMR, and everything shared in session remains strictly confidential, except in rare circumstances required by law or ethical duty:

    • You provide written consent to share information with another party.

    • There is suspected or confirmed risk of harm to a child (under 18), requiring a report to the Children’s Aid Society.

    • We receive a subpoena or court order requesting clinical records or testimony.

    • There is an imminent risk of suicide or harm to others, and safety planning cannot be established.

If confidentiality must be broken for safety or legal reasons, we will make every effort to discuss this with you first. In urgent cases where immediate action is necessary, we will contact the appropriate authorities and document the process in our EMR.

  • We ask all clients to review the following policies before beginning therapy:

    • Payment Policy:

Payment is due in full immediately after each session. Please speak directly with your clinician if you have concerns about payment or accessibility.

    • Sliding Scale:

Sliding scale rates may be offered when available, based on client need and clinician capacity.

    • Cancellations:

      • Cancellations or reschedules made within 48 hours of your session will be charged 50% of the session fee.

      • Cancellations, reschedules, or no-shows within 24 hours will be charged the full session fee.

    • Late Attendance:

    • If you’re not online at your session start time, your therapist will reach out by email within 5–10 minutes. If you have not joined after 15 minutes, the session will be marked as a no-show, and the full fee will apply.

    • Sessions cannot be extended beyond the originally scheduled 50 minutes.

These policies help us maintain structure, respect your therapist’s time, and ensure that sessions remain consistent and accessible for all clients.
