10 Frequently Asked Questions about Group Psychotherapy
You might be wondering, what exactly is this whole group therapy thing?
If you’re curious but have no idea what to expect, you’re not alone. Let’s answer some of the questions you might be wondering before joining.
Group Therapy FAQs:
1. What is group therapy?
Group psychotherapy is a space where a small group of people come together with a therapist to explore shared experiences, learn new skills, and support one another. While everyone’s experiences are different, there is often a lot of comfort in realizing you’re not the only one navigating something.
2. What happens during a group session?
Sessions include a combination of psychoeducation, restorative yoga practices, skills development, and evidence-based psychotherapy. There will be opportunities to share and connect, but you won’t be expected to talk for the entire session.
3. Do I have to share personal things?
No, you are always welcome to participate at your own pace. You’re never required to share anything you’re not comfortable sharing. You can participate by listening, reflecting, asking questions, or sharing when it feels right for you.
4. What if I’m nervous about joining?
That’s completely normal! Many people feel some anxiety before their first group session. You don’t need to arrive feeling confident or knowing exactly what to say. We’ll take some time to get comfortable and establish expectations together.
5. Is group therapy confidential?
Confidentiality is an important part of creating a safe group environment. Participants are asked to respect the privacy of others and not share what is discussed outside of the group. We’ll review group confidentiality and expectations before we begin.
6. How many people will be in the group?
This group is expected to have approximately 3–8 participants.
7. How is group therapy different from individual therapy?
Individual therapy gives you dedicated one-on-one time with your therapist, while group therapy offers the additional experience of learning and connecting alongside others. Group therapy can provide opportunities to feel understood, practice new skills with others, and learn from different perspectives.
8. How much does the group cost, and is it covered by insurance?
The total cost of the group is $480. Group therapy is typically covered by many extended health benefits plans if your plan includes coverage for a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying). However, coverage varies between insurance providers and plans, so you’ll need to check directly with your insurance company to confirm your specific coverage, reimbursement amount, and whether group therapy is eligible.
9. How do I know if this group is right for me?
That’s exactly what the free consultation is for! We’ll have a chance to talk about what you’re looking for, answer your questions, and determine whether the group feels like a good fit. There’s no pressure to continue if you decide it isn’t the right fit for you.
10. Who is the facilitator, and what experience do they have with groups?
The group is facilitated by our psychotherapy associate Genna whose approach combines somatic and body-based practices, mindfulness, self-compassion, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to support people in building a more compassionate and sustainable relationship with themselves. She has facilitated a variety of yoga groups as well as psychoeducational and nervous-system-focused workshops, bringing experience in creating supportive, engaging spaces for learning, reflection, and connection.
If you found yourself curious about group therapy but still had a few questions, I hope this helped give you a better idea of what to expect!
